ALYIA GASKINS JOINS THE RACE FOR ALEXANDRIA CITY COUNCIL
She joins the at-large race for city council, pursuing an open vacancy in the six-member council selection this primary season
ALEXANDRIA, VA - Alyia Gaskins, dedicated community advocate and public health strategist, released the following statement announcing for her bid for the Democratic primary on June 8th:
“As I’ve watched our community struggle over this past year, it's clear that the time for bold and unified leadership to plan for an equitable future is now. I’m running to bring a missing perspective and a new voice to our city council. We are living in a unique time: a pandemic, economic uncertainty, a reckoning over racial justice, and climate change that threatens our city. These all have enormous implications for Alexandria and our families struggling to keep small businesses afloat, securing affordable child care, and thinking about their future in the city we love. As a proven leader focused on solving our most pressing challenges collaboratively, I will ensure Alexandria and the amazing people of this city have a leader who is on their side, listens, and meets the opportunity we will create together,” said Alyia Gaskins.
Alyia has also served on the Virginia Fair Housing Board, Transportation Commission, Agenda Alexandria, the Chamber of Commerce Government Relations Committee, the Hunger Free Alexandria Steering Committee, the Women of Color in Community Development Board of Directors, and the Good Shepherd Housing Leadership Council. She is a graduate of Emerge Virginia.
